CAST of CHARACTERS

The Baker Twins (Shannon and
Shauna) with Katya Gardner and Darrell Dennis
DARRELL DENNIS as BRIAN DOUGLAS (First
Nations, 30’s):
A freewheeling artist, self-involved but with a big heart.
He wants to change the world by attacking the system. Brian
is a staunch upholder of Native pride but is even more
desirous of quenching Native hypocrisy. Brian is always
flying by the seat of his pants, leaping from part time job
to part time job. In many ways Brian is a modern day
Trickster. He is not a slacker though, and works very hard
when involved in something he believes in.
CARMEN MOORE as
KRISTA SELLERS (First Nations, 30’s):
One of the top activist lawyers in the downtown East Side.
KRISTA is a contradiction of sorts. While she fights for
change within the system she is also a creature of comfort.
KRISTA’s credit card bills demonstrate her extravagant
lifestyle. She is very proud of the progress she has made in
the Aboriginal justice system but dreams of someday moving
back to the reserve with a husband and kids, and negotiating
land claims. Deep down she knows this future may not be with
her fiancé PAUL. Is it maybe in Brian’s future?
TOM HA (Asian, 30’s):
BRIAN’S other best friend, sidekick, and documentary
cameraman. Tom is a little goofy but is also blessed with a
quick wit. He is constantly attempting a variety of non-
traditional endeavors: N.H.L. hockey player, Rapping,
inventing, television production, and performance art, to
name just a few. TOM will never give up because he is a firm
advocate for the Canadian dream. The only problem is, TOM
doesn’t know yet what his dream is and will continue to
search until he finds his purpose.
PAUL McGEE (Caucasian, 30’s):
Krista’s fiancé and Brian’s unspoken nemesis, PAUL is the
ultimate catch: rich, handsome and successful. Women would
do anything to be with him but PAUL has one major weakness:
KRISTA SELLERS. He is uncomfortable around her world and
friends but suffers through it for KRISTA’S sake. PAUL’S
family is not happy about their relationship and has no
shame about making their displeasure known. Eventually,
Brian and Paul will face off but for now, Paul will sit back
and suck it up for Krista’s sake… up to a point that is.
KATYA GARDNER AS DOMINIQUE SWAIN (Caucasian, 30’s):
Dominique is the Paris Hilton of Vancouver. Born to
millionaire parents, Dominique grew up extremely spoiled and
pampered. So much so, that she truly believes that she can
do no wrong and everyone adores her. Dominique is Brian’s
girlfriend (or mentor in Dominique’s mind) and Krista’s ex
sorority roommate (or mentor in Dominique’s mind). DOMINIQUE
has an insatiable desire to be at the center of attention.
She will do everything she can to change the dynamics
between BRIAN and KRISTA. As time goes on she will realize
that she cannot disrupt the close bond between the two and
she will stop at nothing to make them bend to her will.
SHAUNA and SHANNON BAKER as TERRI and TANYA DELINE: (First
Nations, 20’s)
Stunningly beautiful identical twins. TERRI and TANYA live
next door to BRIAN. They are fiercely loyal to one another,
particularly in relationships. If they find themselves
liking the same guy then neither of them will date him. In
business, TERRI and TANYA also make a great team. TERRI is
the fiery, take no prisoners, go-getter, and TANYA is the
practical one that can figure out mathematics and
statistical odds in the blink of an eye. TERRI and TANYA are
the living manifestation of yin and yang in a very sexy
package. They currently work as waitresses at Tom’s parent’s
restaurant: THE HA- CIENDA (The only Tex-Mex restaurant in
Vancouver’s Chinatown).
GRAHAM GREENE as ADAM CARDINAL (First Nations, 60’s):
The cantankerous poltergeist spirit that is trapped in
Brian’s apartment. Misogynistic, crude, and politically
incorrect, Adam delights in giving Brian bad advice about
his life. ADAM has become dependent on BRIAN because he is
ADAM’S only connection to the outside. Even though GRAHAM is
dead he is constantly coming up with schemes to make his
death more comfortable. BRIAN has tried to convince GRAHAM
that he needs to learn about kindness before he can take the
journey to the spirit world. As a result, ADAM has taken it
upon himself to help BRIAN with whatever problems arise in
his life. GRAHAM believes that every time he helps BRIAN, he
is closer to being allowed into the next world. In the
meantime, he’s going to live death to the fullest!

SERIES OUTLINE
TALES OF AN URBAN INDIAN is the very first series of its
kind; a quirky comic- drama about Canada’s urban Native
population. The series follows the escapades of BRIAN
DOUGLAS (Darrell Dennis, a First Nations actor who is
disillusioned by the stereotypes of Native people in the
media. To battle these stereotypes, BRIAN has resolved to
expose the truth about the urban Aboriginal experience and
change the perception of Native people forever. If only he
could get his personal life together first! His first major
endeavor in this quest is a homemade documentary entitled,
“TALES OF AN URBAN INDIAN”.
BRIAN is pulled in many different directions by an eclectic
mix of characters: DOMINIQUE (Katya Gardner), his spoiled
heiress girlfriend, TERRI AND TANYA (Shauna and Shannon
Baker), the two beautiful Native twins that live next door,
ADAM (Graham Greene), the grouchy spirit that haunts Brian's
apartment, and KYE7E JOSIE (Tantoo Cardinal), Brian's
grandmother and voice of reason. These people, combined with
the countless girlfriends, bosses, producers, enemies, etc.,
will continue to help or hinder BRIAN in his “Tales”.
With the financial and technical support of his best
friends, KRISTA SELLERS (Carmen Moore) and TOM HA (Paul Bae),
Brian will reveal the Aboriginal experience in an exercise
that is as much purging therapy, as it is art. Brian’s
mantra in his manifesto is, “Pure honesty, no matter how
ridiculous, painful, embarrassing, or hurtful it may be.”
This mantra will prove to be problematic for many of the
subjects involved.
Perhaps the greatest challenge for Brian is his relationship
with Krista. As children, they were betrothed to each other
in a symbolic Indian ceremony. Despite separating as
children, Brian and Krista’s platonic relationship is
stronger than ever. So strong in fact, that they are
developing unspoken feelings for one another. With Krista
recently affianced and Brian unable to get his life
together, it seems that Krista and Brian will never fulfill
their childhood betrothal. The question with these two is
not “will they or won’t they?” but rather “Would they and
should they?”… Only time will tell.
